Ben Griffith Training For Krystal Square Off
More on the competitive eating front this morning (get used to it people, it’s Krystal Square Off season).
A link to a profile story on up-and-coming eater Ben Griffith over at Eatfeats caught my eye. Griffith, or Turtle as he is known, is from Newton County, Ga., – my hometown, and was interviewed by the Newton Citizen, my hometown paper, about his foray into the competitive eating world.
While he is still somewhat of an unknown in the sport and sat out most of 2007 due to an arm injury, he has put up some impressive numbers in contest like the 2006 Waffle House Waffle Eating Contest, where he ate 10 waffles in 10 minutes (Krystal Square Off champ Joey Chestnut won that contest with 18 waffles).
Griffith tells the paper he is now in training for the upcoming KSO V, saying he’ll start practicing “about a month in advance” by “buying a couple of [Sackfuls}...and practic[ing] with a stopwatch.” He also says he enjoys eating Krystal when he’s not training, claiming to eat at the restaurant “once or twice a month”.
We’re guessing he’ll try to qualify for the Krystal Square Off World Championship in Chattanooga at the Atlanta qualifier on September 6. And we’ll most definitely be there cheering him on.
