Crazy Legs Conti stretching before attempting to break the Guinness World Record of movie watching.

Krystal Square Off V competitive eater Crazy Legs Conti recently took a break from stuffing his face to attempt five days of ’round the clock movie watching.

Crazy Legs, along with several other endurance champions, have been competing to see who can sit through 121 hours of movies in order to break the current Guinness Movie Watching World Record of 120 hours and 23 minutes as a part of the Netflix Movie Watching World Championship.

The contest has been taking place in New York’s Time Square since October 2.  The winner, which will be decided today as the marathon nears its 121st hour, will receive $10,000, a lifetime subscription to Netflix and the first ever Popcorn Bowl trophy.

The contestants have been allowed a 10 minute break every two hours (so in between each movie) to stretch, go to the bathroom, etc.  However, while the movies are on, they must keep their eyes on the screen and are immediately disqualified if they fall asleep. Medical professionals have also been on hand to monitor the contestants’ conditions throughout the event and to determine if contestants are truly “watching” or are simply staring at the screen.

Unfortunately, according to Netflix’s Facebook page, it looks like Crazy Legs won’t be taking that Popcorn Bowl trophy home, as he only made it through 33 hours movie watching.  You can watch an interview with Crazy Legs after dropping out of the contest here.  According to the eating pro, Chevy Chase’s movie Fletch was the final movie of the contest for him.

Krystal Square Off Recap: Nashville And Knoxville Qualifiers

Tim Eater X Janus claims victory at the Knoxville qualifier for the Krystal Square Off V with 63 Krystals.

Tim "Eater X" Janus claims victory at the Knoxville qualifier for the Krystal Square Off V with 63 Krystals.

This past weekend was a busy one for the Krystal Square Off V qualifying circuit.  Not only was there the hectic, back-to-back event schedule to content with, but there was also a bit of controversy surrounding the contest in Nashville, which ultimately led to the IFOCE instating a new rule.

Here’s a recap of the Nashville contest courtesy of the Krystal Square Off Blog:

In a contest marked by controversy and the hottest and most humid conditions seen on the tour so far, Juliet Lee’s victory had some calling foul due to excessive debris during the eight-minute regulation period. After a lengthy conference with judges, Major League Eating made the decision to hold a three person eat-off, the first ever in Krystal Square Off history, between “The Lovely” Lee, Eric “Badlands” Booker and Juris “Dr. Bigtime” Shibayama. Each was presented with 10 Krystals, and Lee was first to consume hers, earning her the win.

Because of the excessive debris issue and the difficulty judges had tallying the number of Krystal burgers actually consumed by a number of eaters, include Lee, Major League Eating held an impromptu conference call Saturday evening to discuss establishing a new rule that will help prevent confusion in future contest.

Coined the Mustard Yellow Card, the rule will allow judges to disqualify competitors for “messy eating” after an initial warning is given.

A full explanation of the rule from IFOCE.com:

Major League Eating announces today the creation of a new rule called the Mustard Yellow Card. The rule allows league officials and judges to formally caution a competitor if the official or judge feels said competitor is eating in a fashion that is so messy it impedes the ability to determine the amount of food consumed.

After one caution is given the judge has the right to disqualify the warned competitor if the competitor has not satisfactorily corrected his or her eating style.

While no formal definition need be given, messy eating can include food and debris on a competitor and in a competitor’s eating area and cups.

Thankfully, Sunday’s contest in Knoxville was straightforward with Tim “Eater X” Janus the clear winner with 63 Krystals.  Janus did break the previous Knoxville record of 49, which was set by Chip “Burger” Simpson last year.  Crazy Legs Conti finished second with 50 Krystals, just one burger short of what he needs to be a Wild Card contender.

Krystal News You Can Use

Hip-hop recording artist and competitive eater Badlands Booker recently released a song about Krystal on his Facebook page.

Hip-hop recording artist and competitive eater Badlands Booker recently released a song about Krystal on his Facebook page.

We’ve got several pieces of news for you to chew on this morning.  Most of them are Krystal Square Off V related, as the qualifying tour is really getting interesting with the championship event only 16 days, 5 hours and 53 minutes away.  But there’s some other bits of info scattered throughout as well - like how you can win a $100 Krystal Gift Card this weekend.

The Nashville Qualifier for the Krystal Square Off V will take place tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. at the Tennessee State Fair, and according to the Krystal Square Off Blog, tomorrow’s contest “is shaping up to be the most fiercely contested showdown of the season.”  Click here to find out why.

It’s a busy weekend for the Krystal Square Off V tour.  Immediately after the 8-minute contest in Nashville, the hamburger-eating tour will hit the road for Knoxville where Sunday’s qualifier will be held at the Tennessee Valley Fair at 2:00 p.m.  This event has shaped up to be a Who’s Who of competitive eating with fan favorites such as Tim “Eater X” Janus and Crazy Legs Conti set to battle it out.

According to our sister blog, Takeru Kobayashi, the Japanese eating legend and three-time Krystal Square Off Champion, just confirmed that he will compete at the regional qualifier in Birmingham on Saturday, Sept. 20.  This is big news because it all but guarantees a Joey Chestnut vs. Kobayashi match up at this year’s championship finals in Chattanooga.

As we mentioned earlier this week, the Krystal in Hixson, Tenn., will host the first of three Sample Saturdays tomorrow between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.  Not only will you be able to sample Krystal’s expansive menu items for free, but you can also enter a drawing for a $100 Krystal Gift Card.

Hip-hop recording artist and competitive eating legend Eric “Badlands” Booker has released a new song about Krystal on his Facebook page.  Booker is one of the “originals” in the sport of competitive eating, and he’ll be coming off a two-year retirement tomorrow when he attempts to qualify for the Krystal Square Off V in Nashville.

If we’ve told you once, we’ve told you twice - but head over to the Krystal Square Off Blog for all the latest hamburger happenings.  You can also follow the action live from this weekend’s contest at Twitter.com/ksquareoff.

Crazy Legs Conti Attempts Michael Phelps Breakfast

The wonderful site that is CollegeHumor has a video of Krystal competitive eater Crazy Legs Conti attempting to consume “The Michael Phelps Breakfast” in less than five minutes.

And in case you’ve been living under a rock for the past two weeks and don’t know what an eater Phelps is, his usual breakfast includes:  three pancakes, three pieces of French toast, three fried egg sandwiches, a bowl of grits, an omelet and two cups of coffee.

The video of Crazy Legs is below.  And while we’re loving the swimming cap, goggles and the disturbingly tight pants, our favorite is the surprise appearance of the huge Krystal cup he’s using.

Perhaps a souvenir from last year’s Krystal Square Off?

ESPN’S Mike Golic Goes Head to Head Against Competitive Eaters

Mike Golic of ESPN’s Mike and Mike in the Morning battled “Pretty Boy” Pete Davekos, Tim “Eater X” Janus and Crazy Legs Conti in a buffalo wing eating competition this morning live on-air. As we reported earlier, Golic had to compete against the eating pros after losing the 2008 NCAA bracket wager against co-host Mike Greenberg.

This morning’s three-minute competition was called “The Feast on the First”, and even though Golic held his own, he came in last with 15 wings. The rest of the results are below along with two videos. The first video is of the actual competition while the second is of the trophy presentation.

Much love to “Eater X” for rocking the Krystal beanie. We had no idea he’d be sporting his Krystal Square Off gear. Perhaps it’s his good luck hat? If so, it sure worked this morning.

MIKE AND MIKE IN THE MORNING’S “FEAST ON THE FIRST” RESULTS:

4th place - Mike Golic with 15 wings
3rd place - “Pretty Boy” Pete Davekos with 22 wings
2nd place - Crazy Legs Conti with 23 wings
1st place - Tim “Eater X” Janus with 31 wings

Competitive Eating Welcomes Back Oyster Championship

Competitive eating's Acme Oyster House contest returns tomorrow
Competitive eating's Acme Oyster House contest returns tomorrow
Tomorrow, the competitive eating circuit will welcome back the Acme Oyster-Eating Championship after a two-year hiatus. The eight-minute eating contest will take place during the French Quarter Festival, and many of competitive eating’s top gurgitators will be on hand to compete for the coveted Acme Oyster House title.

The famed contest is perhaps best known for launching the career of Krystal competitive eater Crazy Legs Conti back in 2002 and providing Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas with one of her most impressive records of 46-dozen oysters in ten minutes. That’s 552 oysters!

Tomorrow’s contest promises to be exciting as rumor has it Thomas will not be competing, giving other eaters the chance to suck and slurp their way into the top slots.

Pat “Deep Dish” Bertoletti, the third-place finisher in the 2007 Krystal Square Off, is the early favorite but with a field of eaters like Crazy Legs (ranked 11th), Juliet Lee (ranked 10th), Tim “Gravy” Brown (ranked 13th), ChipBurger Simpson (ranked 9th) and the home state’s top eater, Damon Serigent, the top oyster title is definitely up for grabs.

For those of you in New Orleans for the event, don’t forget to stop by the famous Krystal on Bourbon Street.  You never know, you may run into the Burger King himself while there.

Do you think anyone will beat Sonya Thomas's record of 46-dozen oysters in ten minutes?

ESPN’s Mike Golic May Eat Krystals In Competitive Eating Challenge

Thanks to Eatfeats.com, we just learned that Mike Golic of ESPN’s Mike and Mike in the Morning will go head to head against competitive eaters live on-air, and Krystal hamburgers may be the food of choice. Apparently Golic lost the 2008 NCAA bracket wager against co-host Mike Greenberg, and as a result, Golic will have to compete against some of the world’s best competitive eaters. Click here for more history on their bracket wagers.

Yesterday, Krystal Square Off competitive eater Crazy Legs Conti was on the show and suggested Golic consume Krystal burgers during the challenge. Greenberg asked Crazy Legs to serve as a commentator for the event, and fellow competitive eaters Tim “Eater X ” Janus and Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas were named as some of the possible competitors.

Check out the video clip below of Crazy Legs on the show, and check back soon as we’ll post more information about Golic’s upcoming (possibly Krystal) competitive eating challenge.

USA Today Interviews Expert Krystal Competitive Eaters

Krystal competitive eater crazy legs conti interviews for usa today

Krystal Competitive Eater, Crazy Legs Conti, discusses Super Bowl eating tips with USA Today.

Because this Sunday’s game is more about the food and less about the football, USA Today interviewed some of the top competitive eaters from the Krystal Square Off World Hamburger Eating Championship to get their advice on how to eat a lot of food in a short amount of time. While Crazy Leg Conti’s suggestion of dunking and eating wet food (like deviled eggs) is slightly disgusting, you gotta trust a man who can eat 45 Krystal Hamburgers in 8 minutes. Check out the rest of the eater’s tips here. Also, don’t forget to take photos of you and your friends downing Krystals
