Krystal Recipe Spotlight: Krystal Casserole – A.K.A. “The Lopez”
After years of speaking with Krystal Lovers across the South, one thing remains consistent: Krystal Lovers truly love Krystal’s tasty menu items and incorporate them into their lives as often as possible. This often leads to a number of unique Krystal Recipe creations (and Hall of Fame stories), like “The Lopez,” which was recently featured on Creative Loafing’s Omnivore Blog.
Of course, we felt it was worth retelling because honestly, it sounds pretty darn good. Story has it that Steve Lopez, tour manager for Widespread Panic, used to have the Fox brothers (of Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q restaurant in Atlanta) make him a “Krystal Casserole.” The recipe called for Krystal’s famously small, square hamburgers covered in spicy brisket chili, tator tots and melted cheese. The Fox Bros. must have thought it was tasty too because they introduced a modified version of the Krystal Casserole to their own menu. Too bad they left out the best part – The Krystal.
We suggest a few more changes for a newly named “The Real Krystal Casserole.” It calls for Krystal burgers, Krystal Pup Chili, Krystal’s Hashbrown Kryspers, shredded cheese and bacon. You knew we had to add bacon!

At 6 a.m. this morning, the brand new Krystal restaurant in Columbus, Miss. opened its doors, giving area residents a chance to enjoy the restaurant’s signature, big taste menu items hot off the grill.
With noon rapidly approaching, soon it will be time for you and your co-workers to break for lunch. And if your office, like ours, doesn’t have a cafeteria in the basement, everyone must either head out on their own or decide as a group what to eat.
